Off the beaten path, Sarajevo

Bosni-Herzegovina is certainly not a place that comes to mind when you think of vacation spots.  But, if it doesn’t come to your mind, it doesn’t come to the mind of others either.  And that my friends is one of the most important secrets to a great vacation.  There is an optimal number of people you want around to make you vacation enjoyable.

If you are just traveling to the most popular destinations, then you are not likely to experience that authenticity that place has to offer.  Just think about, if a place is built around tourism, then what your options are will be determined about tour-business players in town who want you money.

There is something deeply attractive about being in a real place with real people.  Arriving in Sarajevo is a bit like stepping of a time machine and back into the 16th century.  In the Baščaršija district you find 16th century mosques and amazing mini shops from the Ottoman-era.

This history is not frozen there.  You can wonder down boulevards and feel like you are back in Austro-Hungarian times.  Yet, exactly because the event of history have marked this place, you will also find signs of the recent and bloody conflict which raged here during the 90’s.  Although wondering along the beautiful Miljacka river you, flowing under graceful bridges, you might almost forget this sense of conflict.

Only a short distance from the city near the Binaric Alps is the last semi-nomadic village in southern Europe, with tin-roofed stone house straddling the dramatic half-mile deep Pakitnica Canyon.
