Sleeping Beauty couldn’t afford to sleep in NYC

Crosby Street Hotel – New York

It’s true, the Big Apple never sleeps.  But we mere mortals do!  New York New York!  Here’s the basic truth about staying in New York City: it’s expensive.  Unless you are lucky enough to have friends in the city with whom you can (amicably) stay, a trip to New York gets expensive fast.  The tradeoff, in my opinion, is that once you are there and have proper accommodations, there is an almost endless list of activities to do.  And mind you not all of these will cost you much.

Really the trick is to get yourself at least digitally involved in the social circles of NYC.  One trick my friends and I often use is staying connected to the “student union” websites for various universities and colleges in NYC.  These are a treasure trove of interesting and engaging lectures, talks, performances, and gallery shows of all kinds.  And the best part is that you can find great things to do without have to spend a lot of money.

Regardless of where in NYC you are staying, it’s going to cost you.  So, the only really issue in the mind of this traveler is “what is style-to-dollar ratio” for where I am staying.  If you dig a little deeper you can often find excellent boutique, trendy places to stay without having to spend much more that you would on a mass-public hotel.

One such place that comes to mind from one of my stays is the Crosby Street Hotel.  Located in the heart of SoHo between Prince, Spring and Lafayette Streets; it is simultaneously central to everything and yet on a quiet street.    This is a only venture of Firmdale Hotels in NYC.  Firmdale is a UK-based boutique hotel operator with six hotels in London and now one in New York.

This is not a giant corporation, it is privately owned by husband and wife team of Tim and Kit Kemp.  And Kit Kemp has been responsible for the interior design of each hotel.  Color, texture, quirky themes and art collections are part of her signature style that manages to translate into an inviting and beautiful hotel experience.
