don’t forget the fikabröd on your fika in Söder. What?

Söder, where the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo might have been.

Well, really, if you’re a fan of this series, then I need not agitate you by suggesting that the GWDT might have vacationed in Stockholm’s Södermalm district.  But if you think about it, it does suit her style.  Well, at least we do know that Söder (as the locals called it) was home to the character Mikael Blomkvist in the novel.

When you are traveling in Sweden, you expect everything to have the crisp clean line of a Volvo.  Well, that is generally the case and much of Sweden is remarkably, shall we say tidy.  But, Söder is surprisingly non-conformist.

Back in the 18th century this district was wretched slum.  But, of late this place has transformed itself  with a trendy mix of shopping possibilities; everything from Thai, Greek, to Turkish food offerings, and historic falu red cottages.

If a cottage is not your style and if you are feeling a bit repentant perhaps you might enjoy a stay behind bars.  The Långholmen was once the prison that housed Sweden’s most notorious criminals.

The Swedes, like most Europeans make an art of relaxing, or fika as they call (taking a break), which was once a slang word for kaffi (coffee).  But, of course a fika is no mere kaffi break, and when in Sweden, do what the Swedes do and be sure to relax into your fika with  fikabröd (pastries).
