Taipei 101
I mentioned in one of my other posts, that we recently had friends visit us from New York City. And like most people who live in NYC, they seem not to notice just how many “New Yorks” there are around the world. Yes, in far off Asia, the Taipei is certainly the “Big Apple” of Taiwan.
This dynamic, vibrant city is as alive as what you might expect of New York. Yet this tiny island offers not just the city life, but also some amazing outdoors activities.
If you are going to see one of the wildly beating hearts of new Asia, then taking a ride at 40 miles an hour straight up to the top of Taipei 101 (the world’s 2nd tallest skyscraper) is certainly one of the best first stops. And on your way there, on the spotless subway, don’t be surprised to see as much Prada and Louis Vuitton and as you see old Asia.
Actually, a friend of mine who was recently there, called the subway “freakishly” clean. Of course she was on her way to eat fancy French food somewhere in the Xin Yi district. That’s right, I said “fancy French food,” in Taiwan. One of my personal favorite is eight-story tall Eslite bookstore.
Once you’ve had enough of city-life, you don’t have to travel far to find some incredible nature. The island of Taiwan has eight national parks. Only two hours by train from Taipei is the Taroko National Park.
This place is really worth the trip to create a perfect blend for your trip with some dramatic nature. Here you can experience all four seasons in just one day.
